Game 5 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final delivered a pivotal shift in momentum as the Florida Panthers edged closer to a second consecutive championship with a commanding 5–2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
Played at Rogers Place in front of a raucous Edmonton crowd, the matchup showcased the Panthers’ defensive discipline and opportunistic scoring, led by a standout performance from veteran Brad Marchand.
While the Oilers showed flashes of resilience, including Connor McDavid’s long-awaited first goal of the series, Florida’s early dominance and structured play proved decisive.
Brad Marchand’s Brilliance
The 37-year-old veteran opened the scoring in the first period with a dazzling solo effort and added another in the third, bringing his total to six goals in the Final, most in a Cup Final since 1988. Marchand shares this achievement with NHL Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux.
Sam Bennett’s Clutch Streak
Bennett netted his 15th of the playoffs late in the first, extending his road goal streak to six games—an NHL postseason rarity. Bennett looks to be a potential Conn Smythe finalist once the Stanley Cup Finals end.
McDavid finally breaks through.
Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the series early in the third, briefly giving the Oilers hope. McDavid has been a beacon for the Oilers throughout the playoffs; however, the Panthers have managed to contain him effectively so far in the series.
Key Takeaways
Psychological Edge: Florida heads home with a chance to clinch the Cup in front of their fans. That is a massive confidence boost, especially after silencing a hostile Edmonton crowd with such a composed performance. It was a statement game from Florida—disciplined, opportunistic, and relentless.
Defensive Dominance: The Panthers’ ability to stifle Edmonton’s top scorers—limiting high-danger chances and controlling puck possession—has tilted the ice in their favor. It is not just about goals; it is about dictating the game’s rhythm.
Veteran Leadership Peaking: Brad Marchand’s performance is not just about statistics, but about timing. His goals have been momentum-killers for Edmonton and rallying points for Florida. His trade to the Panthers at the deadline has been pivotal for the franchise.
Game 5 had no shortage of drama. In short, the Panthers have the wind at their backs. But, momentum in hockey can be fragile, especially with a team like Edmonton that has already pulled off one comeback in this series. With the series now tilting 3–2 in favor of the Panthers, the pressure shifts to Game 6 in Sunrise, where the Cup could be hoisted or the series extended to a dramatic Game 7.
