Director and writer Aaron Sorkin has a new movie coming out, The Social Reckoning, the sequel to The Social Network.
Sorkin won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the first movie. Sorkin sat down for an interview with The New York Times. Sorkin shares his thoughts on Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook.
“What I remember is an extraordinary antisocial guy building this very successful social network,” Sorkin said. “This person was uncomfortable kind of in the social structure of college, the way many of us are invented his own social structure so he couldn’t be shut out, the way he was shut out of the final clubs and the social network.”
“He’d be the major of that social structure that was, I mean, the social network was how this Facebook was invented. Social Reckoning is about what Facebook has become and, in particular, the role that it has played and continues to play in the rise of extremism and divisiveness in this country.”
Sorkin has no hard feelings for the real-life Zuckerberg. He’s just trying to write a good script and be fair to him and what he created on Facebook. Sorkin knows that Zuckerberg wants to bring people together with his inventions.
One fascinating part of the interview is Jeremy Strong’s stance on playing the real-life Mark. Strong took the role seriously and came prepared. He would constantly communicate with Sorkin.
“Jeremy Strong, who played Mark, he blows the doors off the place. Playing this part, he was constantly defending Mark to me, not just on the set; he’d write to me late at night,” Sorkin said. “As soon as his last shot was over on his last day of shooting, as soon as I called ‘CUT,’ check the gate, Jeremy Strong marched up to me, and this was the first time I heard him use his own voice on the same, not Mark’s voice.”
Jesse Eisenberg turned down the role and didn’t want to reprise it because he didn’t like being identified as Mark everywhere he went, especially at the airport.
The Social Reckoning will hit the theaters on October 9.
