The Green Bay Packers survived an ugly performance and came back to defeat the New York Jets, 20-17 in overtime, in the home opener at MetLife Stadium.
The Packers have dealt with injuries. They haven’t been great in the fourth quarter. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made costly decisions. The Jets allowed the Packers to control the fourth quarter by controlling the minutes. They gave up an advantage at the end of the game.
The Jets led 17-7 in the fourth quarter. The Packers’ passing and running game were awful. Packers Jordan Love got sacked four times in this game. Matthew Golden and Christian Watson combined for eight catches and 99 receiving yards. Tucker Craft only had two catches.
Running back Kalen Johnson led the team with eight carries and 42 yards. Defense and special teams are what helped the Packers win this game. Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon deserves flowers for this victory. Packers’ defense made key stops in the fourth, especially on the 4th-and-1 play late in the game. Impressive defense, especially since they don’t have Micah Parsons for the first two weeks of the season.
The Packers scored 13 unanswered points to secure the win. Kicker Trey Smack is one of the heroes for the Packers. He tied the game and won it with field goals. The Packers were very close to starting the season 0-2.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith finished with 27-of-41 passes for 247 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
“We had opportunities to close out the game, and we didn’t capitalize,” Smith said.
The Jets didn’t get it done. They had to step up down the stretch and came up small. Lack of execution and conversion. Lousy coaching, and this team still needs more work.
“I’m highly upset,” Glenn said. “Tough way to lose a game. This loss won’t define who we are or what we’re about. I will say that.”
The Jets will travel to Detroit to take on the Lions in Week 3. The Packers will host Atlanta for a Thursday Night game at Lambeau Field.
