Ole Miss Rebels defeated LSU Tigers, 32-24, in an SEC thriller as Lane Kiffin returned to Oxford, Mississippi.
It’s been a wild-west week with the storyline of Kiffin facing his former team. Kiffin went 55-19 in six seasons as the Rebels’ head coach. Ole Miss got its revenge on Kiffin. It was a hostile environment.
Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is the ultimate winner and competitor. Chambliss is a dynamic quarterback. He’s now 10-0 in his career at home. Chambliss had a big first half, going 21-for-27 with 248 yards and two touchdowns. He’s dangerous when running back Kewan Lacy is in action, and even more dangerous when Lacy is not on the field because Chambliss gets the ball more.
Injuries played a factor for both teams. Lacy left the game in the third quarter with a left shoulder injury. Lacy finished with nine carries for 43 yards and one touchdown. LSU’s tight end Trey’Dez Green went down with a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Green had four catches for 60 yards.
The Rebels’ defense played well in the first and fourth quarters. They held the Tigers scoreless in the first, and allowed just three points in the fourth.
LSU did show signs of life in the third quarter. Quarterback Sam Leavitt played with so much heart. He’s a very physical runner. Leavitt threw for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The false start near the end of the game cost the Tigers some yardage.
The game ended with an interception in the end zone by Jaylen Braxton. Rebels head coach Pete Golding earned his fourth win against ranked opponents.
“It was a team effort,” Golding said. “They took offense, defense, special teams, and they were focused all week.”
Kiffin met with the media after the game. He’s happy that the week is over. Kiffin is very grateful for everything Ole Miss has done for him.
“Really emotional driving in on the buses for a lot of reasons,” Kiffin said. “A lot of emotions of gratefulness for this place for the six years went well beyond football.”
LSU will return home to take on Texas A&M. The Rebels will hit the road to face Florida.
