Scottie Scheffler will be making his third appearance at the American’s Cup, which began on Thursday.
Scheffler spoke with the media about the “flukiness” and the relationship he built with other golfers.
“You could always play better,” Scheffler said. “That’s what’s great about our game: continuing to try and figure stuff out and continue to improve. In team format, you look at best ball and alternate shot; there is a little bit of flukiness there for sure.”
Scheffler feels very comfortable in the direction where the team is heading.
“I’ve always had confidence in my partners,” Scheffler said. “My partners have confidence in me. I feel like we didn’t step up on the first tee and feel confident; I’ve had confidence in all the different parts.”
Scheffler focuses on hitting good shots. Control what he can control. Playing in team format is different compared to regular tournaments. Scottie has forged good relationships that have lasted for a lifetime. He truly values kindness with other golfers.
Being a good partner and preparing well for the game are important to Scottie. He shares fun insights from his close relationship with golfer Tom Kim.
“I was excited out there and to play with him,” Scheffler said. “We were going to have a lot of fun. It was the same as I would have done at home. He holds like a 2025 footer. He was celebrating like he just won the tournament. I’m like, “Just chill out a little bit,” Scheffler chuckles.
As of Friday morning, Scheffler has even more reasons to smile. Scheffler and his partner Sam Burns won a match together on Thursday.
“It’s not our first time playing together,” Burns said during the postgame press conference. “I feel like a few times in the past we’ve played pretty well and just gotten beat, and probably just a little bit of a sign of relief to get a point and just let that out finally.”
The United States led 3-2 following Thursday’s four-ball.
