Rory McIlroy won the Masters Tournament last season. It is one of the best storylines of 2025, and it helped him to get that load off his shoulders finally.
McIlroy has experienced many disappointments in his golf career. He heard all the noise from the media naysayers. Winning the Masters put everything to rest.
On Tuesday, the Masters champion joined the media press conference, wearing his Masters jacket, reflecting his return to Augusta to defend his title. Rory feels incredible to come back and loves wearing the jacket.
“Can’t believe it was 12 months ago that I was sitting here and sort of trying to take it all in,” McIlroy said. “To be able to come back and do this press conference in a green jacket that feels pretty good.”
Competition will be very strong this upcoming weekend. Players at the tour are looking at Rory and will want that green jacket. The field in Augusta will also be a factor in how these players will respond. Only one player will be able to manage distractions and come out victorious by the end of Sunday night.
“There are so many players with so much experience on this golf course,” McIlroy said. “It’s not quite like some of the other major championships. That’s the challenge. I feel comfortable on the golf course and with my game. It’s been a good three weeks at home, getting ready physically and mentally and just trying to prepare for everything that this week is going to sort of throw at me.”
Playing his game will be the key ingredient for McIlroy to go back-to-back and secure another green jacket. It’s hard enough to win one; it’s even harder to win two years in a row. We are seeing a much calmer, more relaxed player than last year.
“I feel much more relaxed,” McIlroy said. “I know that I’m going to be coming back here for a lot of years, going to enjoy the perks that the champions get here, and it doesn’t make me any less motivated to go out there and play well and try to win the tournament.”
The Masters will take place from April 9 through 12 in Augusta, Georgia. The first round will begin on Thursday at 7:40 am.
